Ravens
The Raven and the Snake
As I sit at my office corner windows I am often found gazing out at the ocean and it’s antics, however I am also aware of the sky and it’s inhabitants. One day a shadow caught my eye and I looked up and saw a Raven circle around and land on our private road just where the drive ends and a ditch that diverts the water begins. I watched him hop about and as I looked closer I saw something lurching away from him.
I saw the Raven jump and tussle with something but wasn’t sure what it was. He, the Raven was very intent on catching whatever it was that was working so hard to get away from him. The Raven finally won after several attempts and as he brought it up and flung it around I realized it was a snake. The snake got away from about three times but the Raven was insistent and kept going after it. The Raven finally got a good grasp on the snake and flung it around. It appeared as though the Raven was the winner in this tussle.
Ravens in a Pear Tree
Again as I was gazing out my window I noticed some activity across the road in my neighbor Bea’s pear tree. The tree was full of beautiful pears that had a bit of red in them so the really stood out against the green leaves.
The activity was Raven’s picking the pears from the tree and flying off with them. I watched as they walked down the limb to the pear grab it at the stem and then fly off. It was quite a site; a big beautiful black raven with a large red tinged pear flying off together.
One of the raven’s dropped his pear after he did all the work to climb down the limb and grab it. You could almost see his frustration. As much as I was enjoying the show I knew that 4 or 5 ravens would wipe out the fruit on the tree in no time at all, especially if more of their friends found out what they were doing. So I called Bea and we picked the pears together. Of course I got my share for helping.
